India Achieves Record Rice and Wheat Production:. Record Foodgrain Output in India for 2022-23
In the 2022-23 season, India’s agriculture sector achieved record-breaking production levels, with the country’s foodgrain output reaching 329.6 million tonnes. This remarkable figure represents a 4% increase from the previous year’s production of 315.6 million tonnes, according to the government’s fourth and final estimates for the year.
Several major food crops experienced significant increases in production during this period. Rice output, for instance, reached an all-time high of 135.7 million tonnes, indicating a robust growth of 4.6% compared to the previous year’s 129 million tonnes. This figure also surpasses the five-year production average of 120 million tonnes, as reported by the government.
Wheat, another staple crop for India, also witnessed a surge in production. In 2022-23, wheat output stood at 110.5 million tonnes, marking a notable 4.7% increase from the previous year’s production of 105.7 million tonnes.
Food Inflation Challenges
Despite the ample harvests and record food production, India faced elevated consumer food inflation, which reached a 15-month high in August, registering at 7.44%. Cereal prices continued to experience double-digit growth, contributing to this inflationary pressure.
In response to price volatility, the Indian government implemented various measures. It imposed bans on the export of rice and wheat, introduced a 40% duty on onion exports, and permitted duty-free imports of pulses. Furthermore, to maintain stable prices, the government extended restrictions on overseas sugar shipments.
Other notable crop production figures for 2022-23 include a sugarcane output of 490 million tonnes, compared to 439.4 million tonnes in the previous year. Total pulses production reached 26 million tonnes, surpassing the average pulses output of 24 million tonnes over the past five years. The oilseeds sector also saw significant growth, with an output of 41.3 million tonnes, up from 33.9 million tonnes in 2021-22.
