Mountaineers Hoist Tricolor on India’s Highest Peaks in Historic Expedition
In an extraordinary and historic endeavor, a team of 20 mountaineers has achieved the remarkable feat of ascending all the highest peaks in India, proudly unfurling the national flag atop each summit. Hailing from the National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports (NIMAS) in Arunachal Pradesh, these climbers embarked on a pioneering mission known as “Har Shikhar Tiranga.” This mission was conceived as a unique tribute to the nation and its G20 presidency, aligning with the larger framework of the “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav,” which commemorates the 75th year of Indian independence.
A Grueling Expedition
The “Har Shikhar Tiranga” mission was nothing short of an extraordinary feat of physical and mental endurance. Along their arduous journey, these intrepid mountaineers encountered numerous challenges. The night of October 3, in particular, stands out as one filled with spine-tingling drama. Having recently scaled Mt. Jongsong in Sikkim, they were jolted by a sudden cloudburst that unleashed flash floods. Colonel Ranveer Singh Jamwal, who led this fearless team, recalled the harrowing experience: “We had hardly sighed in relief of completing our mission when around 10 pm the first waters came gushing in. Our team managed to get out with our stuff in 10 minutes, and being mountaineers, our first instinct took us up the hills. And that window of 10 minutes and running up to the hills rather than down saved us, I think.”
Navigating Challenges Across the Nation
The scope of this expedition was vast, requiring the team to traverse the length and breadth of India. They faced a multitude of challenges, including navigating remote terrains, dealing with the lack of transportation options, confronting treacherous roads in remote areas, addressing security concerns in Maoist-affected regions, and overcoming language barriers when interacting with local communities.
Unveiling Unnamed Peaks
Notably, the mountaineers discovered that many of the highest peaks in various states lacked official names. For instance, the highest point in Punjab remains unnamed, situated within the Naina Devi Range. This revelation underscores the invaluable contribution of this expedition, which goes beyond adventure and patriotism, extending to the recognition and formal naming of these remarkable geographic features.
A Pioneering Adventure in India’s History
Launched from Arunachal Pradesh on October 16 of the previous year, this audacious mission covered approximately 30,000 kilometers, spanning all the states of India. It stands as a one-of-a-kind adventure, etching an indelible mark in the annals of the country’s history, symbolizing the indomitable spirit of exploration and reverence for the nation’s diverse landscapes.
