Manish Sisodia’s Bail Plea Postponed by Supreme Court in Liquor Policy Case

In a recent development, the Supreme Court of India has decided to postpone the bail plea hearing for Manish Sisodia, former Delhi deputy chief minister and senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader. This decision relates to a case involving alleged irregularities in the AAP government’s liquor policy for the year 2021-22. The apex court’s decision to defer the hearing until October 12 comes after legal arguments presented by Sisodia’s counsel, Abhishek Singhvi, and Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, who was representing both the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

Manish Sisodia’s Legal Battle

Manish Sisodia, a prominent AAP leader, has been at the center of a legal battle since February 26, when he was taken into custody by the CBI. His arrest is linked to his alleged involvement in a ‘scam’ related to the Delhi government’s liquor policy. Following his detention, the ED arrested Sisodia on March 9 in connection with a money laundering case associated with the CBI’s First Information Report (FIR). The legal proceedings have kept Sisodia in custody, and he resigned from his position in the Delhi cabinet on February 28.

High Court’s Stand on Bail Application

Sisodia’s bail application was previously considered by the high court, but it was rejected on two occasions. The court cited Sisodia’s high-profile status, having served as the deputy chief minister and excise minister, as a reason to deny bail. The court expressed concerns that his release could potentially influence witnesses and the ongoing investigation. This decision was further upheld on July 3, 2023, specifically highlighting the gravity of the charges against him.

Alleged Irregularities in Delhi’s Liquor Policy

The legal tussle revolves around alleged irregularities in the Delhi government’s excise policy, which was initially implemented on November 17, 2021. However, this policy was discontinued at the end of September 2022 due to allegations of corruption, creating the backdrop for the legal cases against Manish Sisodia.
