Jammu and Kashmir made history by hosting its first-ever International Marathon, with Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha honoring the winners. Over 1700 runners, including participants from 12 foreign nations, competed in the 42 km Full Marathon and 21 km Half Marathon.
During the felicitation ceremony, Lt Governor Sinha praised the efforts of the Tourism Department, J&K Police, Security Forces, Youth Services & Sports Department, and other stakeholders for the marathon’s massive success. He emphasized how this event has put Jammu and Kashmir on the global marathon map.
Calling the event a historic moment, the Lt Governor acknowledged Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership in transforming J&K into a peaceful and prosperous region, enabling the hosting of such international events.
He mentioned that J&K has recently hosted prestigious events like international cricket matches, Formula-4 races, the G20 Summit, and International Yoga Day.
The Lt Governor announced plans for organizing a similar marathon in Jammu soon, highlighting that J&K’s ideal climate, cultural heritage, hospitality, and natural beauty make it a prime destination for international sporting events. These signature running events in Srinagar and Jammu will attract global participants and further boost tourism.
Bollywood actor Suniel Shetty, present at the event, expressed his admiration for J&K’s hospitality and scenic beauty, predicting that it will soon become a top spot for international events like marathons and film productions. Several prominent officials, sportspersons, and youth were also present at the event.
