Over 100 people killed in floods and landslides in Nepal
Key Highlights:
- Death toll reaches 102, with 64 people reported missing.
- Significant destruction includes 195 damaged houses and 8 bridges.
- Over 3,100 individuals rescued as roads remain disrupted.
The death toll from devastating rain-triggered flooding and landslides in Nepal has risen to 102, according to police reports. The disaster has primarily affected eastern and central regions, with flash floods sweeping through various areas since Friday. The Armed Police Force has reported 64 individuals missing and 45 injured due to the flooding.
The Kathmandu Valley has suffered the most, recording 48 fatalities. Eyewitness accounts describe the current flooding as unprecedented, with residents noting they have not experienced such severe inundation in 40 to 45 years.
The Bagmati River, which flows through Kathmandu, has surpassed danger levels following heavy rains over the weekend, attributed to a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal and the unusual positioning of the monsoon trough.
Scientists warn that while climate change affects rainfall patterns across Asia, the increased flood impacts are significantly driven by unplanned construction in flood-prone areas, reducing water retention and drainage capabilities.
The floods and landslides have caused widespread disruption, damaging infrastructure, burying homes and bridges, and displacing numerous families. Major highways and roads have been obstructed, stranding thousands of passengers.
Security personnel have managed to rescue nearly 3,100 individuals as emergency efforts continue in response to this catastrophic event.
