A 32-year-old man charged in the 2019 Pulwama terror attack that killed 40 CRPF personnel has died of a heart attack in a Jammu hospital, officials reported. Bilal Ahmad Kuchey, a resident of Hajibal village in Kakapora, was among 19 individuals charged by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in connection with the deadly incident.
The attack occurred on February 14, 2019, when a suicide bomber from the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) rammed an explosive-laden vehicle into a convoy of CRPF personnel in Pulwama’s Lethpora, leading to one of the deadliest terror incidents in Jammu and Kashmir.
Kuchey was hospitalised on September 17 after falling ill while in custody at Kishtwar district jail. He passed away on Monday night due to a heart attack, according to officials.
Kuchey was among seven arrested in the case and had been chargesheeted along with 18 others by the NIA on August 25, 2020. He, along with others, had provided logistical support and shelter to JeM terrorists involved in the attack.
The charges against Kuchey included violations under various sections of the Ranbir Penal Code, the Arms Act, and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, among others. The NIA has described the Pulwama attack as part of a larger conspiracy orchestrated by JeM leaders based in Pakistan.
Six terrorists, including three Pakistani nationals, involved in the attack were killed in separate encounters.
However, several individuals, including JeM founder Masood Azhar, remain at large. JeM’s leadership continues to train militants in Afghanistan for future operations, according to NIA findings.
