Bangladesh clinched a historic 10-wicket victory over Pakistan in the first Test of the two-match series in Rawalpindi on Sunday. This landmark win marked Bangladesh’s first-ever Test triumph over Pakistan after 14 encounters, breaking a long-standing winless streak that included 12 defeats and one draw.
The victory not only marked a milestone for Bangladesh but also boosted their position in the ICC World Test Championship standings, where they leaped to sixth place, surpassing Pakistan and South Africa.
Bangladesh now shares a point percentage of 40% with Sri Lanka, while Pakistan dropped to eighth place with a 30.56% point percentage.
The match began under challenging conditions due to a delayed start caused by a wet outfield, but it quickly developed into an intense contest.
Despite only 41 overs being bowled on the first day, Bangladesh made an early impact by claiming four crucial wickets.
Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizwan and Saud Shakeel revived their team’s hopes on Day 2, each scoring a century. Rizwan, in particular, displayed remarkable resilience, scoring an unbeaten 171. Pakistan declared their first innings at 448/6, hoping to force a result.
Bangladesh responded strongly, with Mushfiqur Rahim scoring 191 and Shadnam Islam adding 93, pushing Pakistan to their limits on Day 4.
On the final day, Pakistan crumbled under pressure, being bowled out for 146, with only Rizwan putting up resistance. Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Shakib Al Hasan were the stars for Bangladesh, taking four and three wickets respectively.
Needing just 30 runs for victory, Bangladesh achieved the target in under seven overs without losing a wicket, sealing their place in history.
