- RG Kar Medical College’s Principal resigns amid mounting protests.
On Monday, the Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) initiated a nationwide strike, with thousands of doctors gathering outside hospitals across India.
The strike was sparked by the horrific rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, leading to widespread demands for justice.
Doctors assembled outside prominent hospitals such as Lok Nayak and Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia in Delhi, chanting slogans and calling for action.
Sarvesh Pandey, General Secretary of FORDA, revealed that approximately 3 lakh doctors have joined the protest, vowing to continue the strike until their demands are met. “We will persist until we receive written assurance that our demands will be fulfilled,” Pandey emphasized.
The doctors are pressing for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the case, the establishment of a fast-track court, and the implementation of the Central Protection Act across all hospitals to safeguard medical professionals.
Dr. Aviral Mathur, FORDA India president, expressed that the incident must be condemned by everyone and highlighted that emergency services are still being provided to minimize patient inconvenience.
A protesting doctor at Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital outlined their key demands: a CBI-led fast-track investigation due to perceived bias in the state investigation, the removal of insensitive authorities at RG Kar Medical College, and nationwide enforcement of the Central Protection Act in all hospitals.
Amid the growing unrest, the Principal of RG Kar Medical College, Prof. Sandip Ghosh, offered his resignation, citing defamation and expressing sorrow over the tragedy.
Kolkata Police has summoned three junior doctors and one house staff who were on duty the night of the incident. The brutal crime, which took place on August 9, has ignited nationwide outrage and protests.
