MP Congress Party to Announce First List of Candidates for Upcoming Elections

The Madhya Pradesh Congress party is poised to unveil its first list of candidates on October 15, coinciding with the first day of Navratri. This list, consisting of around 130 candidates, is anticipated to include the party’s state president, Kamal Nath.

Following a meeting of the Central Election Committee (CEC) in the capital, Kamal Nath stated that discussions had been held for 60 seats. He revealed, “We will announce our first list of candidates after ‘shradh.’ Most likely it will be on October 15. We will again hold a meeting of the screening committee and the CEC and then finalize the list.”

The Central Election Committee meeting, presided over by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, saw the presence of senior leaders including Rahul Gandhi, Kamal Nath, K C Venugopal, Ambika Soni, and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, among others.

The first list reportedly comprises 15 former legislators and nearly 90 current MLAs. Kamal Nath is expected to contest from his stronghold, Chhindwara. He had previously mentioned that the Congress would unveil its candidates after the ‘Pitru Paksha’ period, a time dedicated to paying homage to ancestors, which commenced on September 29 and concludes on October 14 this year.

Though the names of 103 candidates had been finalized and endorsed two days prior, the announcement was delayed due to the ongoing ‘Shradh’ period.

In a post on X, Mallikarjun Kharge emphasized the impending change in Madhya Pradesh, stating, “In Madhya Pradesh, youth, women, Dalits, tribals, and backward classes are going to get justice in a few days. There will be a complete stop to the BJP’s injustice, atrocities, and corrupt misgovernance of the last 18 years.”

Kharge expressed confidence that the public would prevent the formation of an undemocratic BJP government in Madhya Pradesh, emphasizing the Congress party’s move toward a full majority. The Madhya Pradesh elections, involving 230 seats, are scheduled for November 17, with the counting taking place on December 3.
