Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express Derailment: Nine Injured, Two Dead, Rescue Operations Ongoing

Reacting to the Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express derailment, Dr. M W Khan, Medical Superintendent (MS) of SMC Gonda, reported on Thursday that nine injured people were admitted to the hospital. Among them, three are critically injured and have been referred to Lucknow for further treatment. The remaining six injured individuals have been declared stable after receiving treatment.
“So far, nine injured people have come to our hospital… Three patients are seriously injured and have been referred to Lucknow for further treatment. Six people admitted here are stable and safe and are being given full treatment,” said Dr. Khan.
In response to the incident, the Ministry of Railways announced ex gratia payments of Rs 10 lakh each to the families of the deceased, Rs 2.5 lakh for those with grievous injuries, and Rs 50,000 for minor injuries. Alongside the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) inquiry, a high-level inquiry has been ordered into the derailment.
“Ex gratia of Rs. 10 lakhs to the family of the deceased, Rs 2.5 lakhs for grievous injury and Rs. 50,000 to the minor injured, has been announced. Apart from the CRS inquiry, a high-level inquiry has been ordered,” stated the Ministry of Railways.
The derailment occurred near Gonda station, between Motiganj and Jhilahi railway stations, under the jurisdiction of North Eastern Railway at about 2:37 am. The incident resulted in two deaths and 20 injuries, with 4-5 coaches of the train derailing. Following the derailment, medical teams and senior officials from the Lucknow division of NER rushed to the site to commence rescue operations.
Pankaj Singh, CPRO of North Eastern Railway, mentioned that a medical van had reached the spot and rescue operations were underway. Helpline numbers have been issued: Lucknow’s helpline is 8957409292, and Gonda’s helpline is 8957400965.
Uttar Pradesh’s Relief Commissioner stated that one NDRF team each was dispatched from Lucknow and Balrampur to Gonda. “Five ambulances were deployed for rescue operations in the train accident, and orders have been given to send more ambulances to the spot. First aid is being given to the injured. The injured are being shifted to the hospital. SDRF teams sent from three districts to expedite relief operations,” he said on X.
