Assam Floods Claim 93 Lives, Nearly 6 Lakh People Affected

The devastating floods in Assam have resulted in 93 deaths, with two recent fatalities reported in Karimganj district, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). Despite marginal improvements as floodwaters recede in various areas, approximately 5.98 lakh people across 18 districts remain affected.
The most impacted districts include Cachar, with 115,900 people affected, followed by Dhubri (81,497), Nagaon (76,012), Goalpara (58,928), Dhemaji (54,577), Golaghat (50,966), and Sivasagar (47,024). Currently, 1,342 villages under 52 revenue circles are still submerged, affecting 25,367.61 hectares of crop area.
The Brahmaputra River continues to flow above the danger level at Neamatighat, Tezpur, and Dhubri, while the Burhidihing and Disang Rivers are also above danger levels in certain areas. Over 58,000 individuals are taking refuge in 172 relief camps and distribution centers across 13 districts. The flood has also impacted 283,712 domestic animals.
In the last 24 hours, the floods have washed away 232 animals, completely destroyed 161 houses, partially damaged 6,663 houses, and affected 13 roads. In Kaziranga National Park, the flood has resulted in the deaths of 196 animals, including 10 rhinos. The park authorities reported that 165 Hog Deer, 10 rhinos, 2 Swamp Deer, and 2 Sambar drowned, while 2 Hog Deer were hit by vehicles, 14 animals died under care, and an otter pup succumbed to other reasons.
Despite these losses, the park authorities have rescued 143 animals, including 2 rhino calves and 2 elephant calves. However, 26 forest camps within the park remain submerged. The flood situation continues to pose a significant challenge, with ongoing efforts to provide relief and rescue operations.
