- Monitoring by Niti Aayog: India’s premier think tank, Niti Aayog, closely monitors SDG progress and guides central ministries and state governments.
- Aspirational Districts Program: India focuses on improving life quality in its 112 most backward districts through the Niti Aayog’s initiatives.
Yojna Patel, the Deputy Permanent Representative of India at the UN, addressed the 2024 United Nations High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), emphasizing India’s commitment to integrating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into its national development strategies.
Patel highlighted the urgent need to renew global commitment to the 2030 Agenda, noting that only 12% of SDG targets are currently on track. She affirmed that India has fully embedded the SDGs into its national policies and strategies.
Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India has launched numerous focused interventions targeting each SDG. Niti Aayog, India’s leading national think tank, plays a crucial role in guiding both central ministries and state governments in implementing these goals. The Niti Aayog governing council, which includes Chief Ministers, closely monitors SDG progress, with regular reviews during state consultations.
Patel pointed out that Niti Aayog employs various indices to track SDG progress and identify critical issues. She praised India’s SDG localization model, which is built on four pillars: institutional ownership, collaborative competition, capacity building, and a whole-of-society approach. This model is bolstered by India’s strong economic growth indices, which stem from systematic reforms, inclusive policies, and leveraging digital public infrastructure.
She also mentioned the aspirational districts’ program initiated by Niti Aayog, aimed at improving the quality of life in 112 of India’s most backward districts. Patel reiterated India’s ambition to become a developed nation by 2047, coinciding with its 100th year of independence. She emphasized India’s commitment to partnerships, including south-south cooperation, and expressed optimism about the high-level political forum as a platform for sharing best practices and fostering global commitment to the 2030 agenda.
Paula Narvaez, President of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), stressed the importance of decisive action in humanitarian response and investment in prevention to fulfill the promise of sustainable development. The 2024 HLPF included insights from 37 countries conducting Voluntary National Reviews and shared best practices and lessons learned in implementing.
