UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer Calls for Ceasefire Amid Israel-Gaza Conflict
Key Highlights:
- Starmer urges for an immediate ceasefire and increased humanitarian aid.
- Over 38,000 Palestinians killed since conflict began on October 7.
- Starmer emphasizes long-term two-state solution and support for Palestinian Authority.
Amid the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has called for a ceasefire and a two-state solution during discussions with Israeli and Palestinian leaders. In a phone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday, Starmer emphasized the urgent need for a ceasefire, the return of hostages, and an increase in humanitarian aid to civilians.
Previously, Starmer faced criticism for not advocating a ceasefire and aligning with former Conservative Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s stance. However, under public pressure, he changed his position in February. Starmer has also been accused of excluding pro-Palestinian Labour members, including former party leader Jeremy Corbyn, from receiving party tickets, though some won elections as independents.
Since the conflict began on October 7, over 38,000 Palestinians have been killed, with women and children comprising a significant portion of the casualties. More than 87,000 people have been injured, and thousands remain missing. The Israeli military offensive has taken a devastating toll on the Palestinian population.
According to a statement by the new British government, the prime minister also highlighted the importance of ensuring long-term conditions for a two-state solution, including financial support for the Palestinian Authority to operate effectively. Starmer assured Netanyahu that the UK wishes to continue its “vital cooperation to deter malign threats” with Israel. Netanyahu’s office did not release a statement following the call.
Starmer also spoke with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, reiterating the same priorities. He emphasized the need for immediate humanitarian relief and a sustainable, peaceful resolution to the conflict. The UK’s stance aims to balance support for Israel’s right to self-defense with the necessity of addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
