JK BJP unit likely to get new president ahead of assembly elections
Jammu, July 5: The Jammu and Kashmir unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is poised for a significant leadership reshuffle, including the appointment of a new president, as it gears up for the upcoming assembly elections.
Party sources indicate that, although the assembly elections have not yet been officially announced, preparations are in full swing. High-level deliberations are ongoing with the party’s central leadership to strategize and reorganize the J&K cadre. Discussions are focused on the reshuffle, with several names being considered for various posts, bringing in new responsibilities and leadership dynamics.
Leadership Discussions and Candidates
On July 4, a pivotal meeting took place in the national capital with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP National President Jagat Prakash Nadda directing the J&K unit to intensify preparations for the elections. Among the senior leaders under consideration for the J&K BJP presidency is Jugal Kishore Sharma, a third-term Member of Parliament.
Sharma, who led the BJP in J&K from 2012 to 2015, is seen as the leading candidate to replace the current president, Ravinder Raina, who has held the position since 2018. Sharma’s strong electoral track record makes him a favorable choice, especially as he was not included in the recent cabinet reshuffle of Prime Minister Modi’s government.
Historical Context and Strategic Moves
The BJP retained two Lok Sabha seats in the recent elections but saw a decline in its vote share, prompting calls for revitalization through new leadership. The record of previous J&K BJP presidents, such as Thakur Baldev Singh (1980-1989) and Sat Sharma (2015-2018), highlights the evolving leadership landscape.
The organizational restructuring, initially scheduled for 2023 but delayed due to the Lok Sabha elections, is expected to be finalized soon, reflecting the party’s strategic moves to strengthen its position in J&K.The BJP high command is anticipated to announce the new organizational structure and leadership soon, aiming to fortify the party’s presence and performance in the forthcoming assembly elections.
