Ernakulam (Kerala) [India], July 2 (VoM): The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), the youth wing of CPIM, held a protest in Ernakulam over the NEET issue, alleging betrayal by the central government. The protest was in response to alleged irregularities in the NEET and UGC NET exams.
Protesters broke through police barricades, prompting the police to use water cannons to disperse the crowd. Eventually, the protesters were permitted to conduct a peaceful march. The march, organized by the DYFI Ernakulam district committee, was led by state committee members Advocate Nikhil Babu, Adv. Bibin Varghese, KV Kiranraj, and Manisha Radhakrishnan.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) is currently facing controversy over alleged irregularities in the entrance exams, including NEET and UGC NET. The NEET-UG examination, conducted by NTA, is the pathway for admissions into MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and other related courses across the country. Around 24 lakh candidates appeared for the NEET-UG 2024, held on May 5 across 4,750 centres.
Following allegations of irregularities, the central government postponed several exams, including NEET PG. Opposition parties and student organizations have been holding regular protests, demanding action. The NTA announced new dates for UGC-NET June 2024 exams, Joint CSIR UGC NET exams, and NCET (National Common Entrance Test) 2024 exams.
The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear on July 8 a batch of pleas alleging paper leaks and irregularities in the NEET-UG 2024 examination. Earlier, the court sought responses from NTA on pleas for a fresh NEET-UG 2024 exam, stating that the “sanctity” of the exam had been affected.
The Centre and NTA had earlier canceled the grace marks awarded to 1,563 candidates, offering a re-test option or the choice to forgo the compensatory marks. A total of 813 students appeared for the re-test held on June 23 across seven centres. Numerous petitions have been filed in the apex court, seeking to recall NEET-UG 2024 results and conduct the examination afresh, alleging paper leaks and malpractices. The Supreme Court had refused to stay the counselling of NEET-UG 2024.
