Exit Polls Indicate Claudia Sheinbaum Likely to Become Mexico’s First Female President
Key Highlights:
- Claudia Sheinbaum poised to become Mexico’s first female President.
- Exit polls show Sheinbaum leading the presidential race.
- Historic election with over 98 million eligible voters.
Claudia Sheinbaum is on track to make history as Mexico’s first female President, according to an exit poll by El Financiero released on Sunday. Alejandro Moreno, head of Surveys and Opinion Studies at El Financiero, stated, “What this exit poll projects, here we can project Claudia Sheinbaum as the winner in the presidential race. There is no difference that makes us doubt the margin of error.”
Sheinbaum, the former mayor of Mexico City, represents the ruling Morena party. Mario Delgado, Morena Party chief, declared, “She will be the first female president in our history!” as reported by CNN.
Despite the National Electoral Institute (INE) not yet declaring official results, both the ruling Morena party and the opposition alliance claimed early victories. Xochitl Galvez, the opposition alliance’s presidential candidate, asserted that her coalition had won and urged President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador to respect the voters’ choice. Following these claims, INE chief Guadalupe Taddei Zavala called on political parties to “respect the rules of the game and accept the results with maturity and responsibility.”
This election, noted as the largest in Mexico’s history, saw over 98 million eligible voters casting their ballots for more than 20,000 public offices, according to CNN. The presidential race is primarily between Claudia Sheinbaum of the Morena party, Xochitl Galvez of the opposition coalition, and Jorge Alvarez Maynez from the center-left Citizens’ Movement.
Polling stations across the country closed on Sunday evening, and while official results are still pending from the INE, Sheinbaum continues to lead based on their figures. This crucial election comes just months before the U.S. presidential election, where immigration is a significant issue for both Donald Trump and Joe Biden. As a vital ally to the U.S. on matters of trade and migration, Mexico’s political landscape will significantly impact bilateral relations.
