Adviser to Pakistan’s Prime Minister on Political and Public Affairs, Rana Sanaullah, has called for the establishment of a ‘mechanism’ to ensure institutions do not interfere in each other’s domains, as reported by Geo News. His statement follows judges’ letters alleging intelligence agencies’ interference in judicial matters.
On Geo News’ “Naya Pakistan,” Sanaullah highlighted the need for this mechanism, referencing the Islamabad High Court (IHC) judges’ letter from March, which accused intelligence agencies of meddling in judicial affairs. Judges including Justice Babar Sattar and Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan, among others, wrote to the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC), requesting a judicial convention to address the alleged interference.
Following the letter’s emergence on March 27, Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa convened a full court meeting to discuss the issue, seeking guidance from the SJC on how judges should respond to executive actions that impede their duties. The next day, CJP Isa met with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, alongside top legal and judicial officials, leading to the decision to form a commission to investigate the judges’ allegations. The federal cabinet approved this on March 30, appointing former Chief Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani as the head of the commission. However, Jillani later recused himself, prompting the Supreme Court to take suo motu notice of the issue.
Sanaullah also commented on the stalled talks with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), blaming PTI founder Imran Khan’s refusal to engage with lawmakers as a key reason for the impasse. He noted that the Inter-Services Public Relations director general suggested lawmakers should resolve their issues without involving the military. Sanaullah argued that Imran Khan’s strategy was detrimental to himself, his party, and the country, emphasizing the need to end the deadlock for the benefit of all parties involved.
