AAP Leader Raghav Chadha Challenges Rajya Sabha Suspension in Supreme Court

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Raghav Chadha has his suspension from the Rajya Sabha to the Supreme Court. Chadha was suspended from the Upper House of Parliament on August 1, accused of a “breach of privilege” by four MPs who alleged that he had violated rules by including their names in a House panel without their consent.

Challenging Suspension in Supreme Court

Raghav Chadha has approached the Supreme Court today to challenge his suspension, asserting that he had the right to nominate names for a committee without needing written consent or signatures from other MPs. He defended his actions, stating that if any MP objected, they could withdraw their name. Chadha’s suspension came after the Rajya Sabha passed a resolution, initiated by leader of the House Piyush Goyal, to suspend him until the privileges committee submitted its findings. Goyal had called for action against Chadha for including the names of certain members of the Upper House in a proposed select committee for the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023.

Second AAP MP Suspended

Raghav Chadha is the second AAP MP to be suspended from the Rajya Sabha during the Monsoon session of Parliament. Earlier, senior leader Sanjay Singh was suspended on July 24, and he was subsequently arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on October 4 in connection with the Delhi liquor policy case.

Challenge Over Bungalow Allotment

In addition to his suspension challenge, Raghav Chadha has also approached the Delhi High Court earlier in the day. He challenged a local court’s order that vacated an interim order regarding his stay at the official government bungalow allotted to him. Chadha had been allocated a Type 6 bungalow in July the previous year and had requested a Type 7 accommodation, which was allotted to him in September. However, in March, the allotment was canceled by the secretariat, arguing that Chadha, a first-time MP, was not entitled to a bungalow of that grade.

Chadha has described these actions as “arbitrary and unprecedented” and suggested that they are part of a larger effort to target vocal Members of Parliament. He has characterized these measures as unwarranted interference in the discharge of their functions as representatives of the House, reflecting what he calls “vendetta politics.”
