World Bank Provides Emergency Support to Rio Grande do Sul after Floods

In response to the recent devastating floods in Rio Grande do Sul, the World Bank is providing crucial emergency support to aid in the state’s recovery efforts. Approximately USD 125 million from existing projects are being reallocated for immediate use, with a focus on urban resilience and flood mitigation.
Teams from the World Bank are actively engaged in providing technical assistance to assess damages, prioritize resources, and deploy funds effectively. Discussions are also underway with federal, state, and municipal governments, as well as regional development institutions, to secure additional resources for what is being termed a “Marshall Plan” for rebuilding the state.
Sophie Naudeau, Acting Director and Operations Manager of the World Bank for Brazil, expressed solidarity with the affected population and emphasized the importance of disaster preparedness. The World Bank’s experience in crisis management and reconstruction will be instrumental in facilitating Rio Grande do Sul’s rapid recovery and implementing measures to prevent future disasters.
