From Hair Dye To Cocktails: 5 Weird And Surprising Uses For Cocoa Beyond Chocolate
From DIY beauty secrets to savory culinary surprises, discover five unexpected uses for this beloved bean
With its rich aroma and indulgent flavor, Cocoa has long been cherished as a treat for the taste buds. However, did you know that its uses extend far beyond desserts and sweet treats?
Jason Vishnefske from Santa Barbara Chocolate explains five unexpected and intriguing ways cocoa can be incorporated into our daily lives.
Natural Hair Dye
Cocoa powder can be used as a natural, temporary hair dye to add subtle highlights or lowlights. Jason writes, ‘Simply mix a few tablespoons of cocoa powder with a bit of conditioner and apply to clean, dry hair. Allow it to sit for between fifteen and twenty minutes before rinsing it out. The cocoa will give a warm, chocolate-brown tint to your locks.’
Dry Shampoo
In a pinch, cocoa powder can also double as a dry shampoo. ‘Sprinkle a small amount onto your roots and massage it in with your fingertips. The cocoa will absorb excess oil and add volume. Brush or shake out the excess powder, and voila – clean, fresh hair without the water,’ Jason says.
Lip Balm
Cocoa butter is a rich, creamy fat that is solid at room temperature, which makes it perfect for use as a lip balm. Melt it down and mix it with a few other simple ingredients like coconut oil and beeswax to create a luxurious, moisturizing lip balm. The cocoa butter nourishes and protects your lips while leaving a subtle chocolate scent behind.
Savory Seasoning
Jason says, ‘Cocoa nibs are the crushed, roasted cocoa beans used to make chocolate. While they have a bitter, intense chocolate flavor on their own, they can add a unique depth of flavor to savory dishes. Try sprinkling them over chili, barbecue, or even roasted vegetables for a surprising twist.’
Cocktail Garnish
Cocoa powder can be used to rim cocktail glasses for a fun, flavorful garnish. Dip the rim of a glass into a bit of water or simple syrup, then dip into a plate of cocoa powder. The cocoa will stick to the rim, adding a rich chocolate aroma and flavor to each sip. ‘It’s a great way to dress up a classic martini or margarita,’ Jason notes.
So, next time you reach for a bar of chocolate, remember that cocoa is a versatile ingredient with many unexpected uses beyond the world of sweets. From beauty hacks to savory seasonings, this humble ingredient is full of surprises!
