Taiwan Detects Chinese Military Activity Near Its Airspace
Key Highlights:
- Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence detected six Chinese military aircraft and seven naval vessels near Taiwan’s airspace.
- Four Chinese military aircraft crossed the median line into Taiwan’s southwestern and eastern Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ).
- Taiwanese armed forces responded by deploying aircraft, naval vessels, and coastal missile systems.
According to Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence (MND), six Chinese military aircraft and seven naval vessels were detected operating near Taiwan’s airspace from 6 am (local time) on Thursday to 6 am (local time) on Friday. Among them, four Chinese military aircraft crossed the median line and entered Taiwan’s southwestern and eastern Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ). In response, Taiwan’s armed forces monitored the situation closely and deployed aircraft, naval vessels, and coastal missile systems.
The MND has been issuing daily reports on Chinese military activities for years, tracking Chinese aircraft, drones, and balloons crossing the Taiwan Strait median line into Taiwan’s side. The median line has historically served as an informal border between China and Taiwan. However, Chinese military activity has increased since former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan in August 2022.
In a separate incident on Thursday, Taiwan’s MND reported tracking 23 Chinese military aircraft and five naval vessels around Taiwan between 6 am on Wednesday and 6 am on Thursday. Eight of the aircraft crossed the median line into Taiwan’s southwestern and eastern ADIZ. Taiwan has observed Chinese military aircraft 98 times and naval vessels 41 times in May alone.
China has been employing gray zone tactics, increasing military aircraft and naval ships’ presence around Taiwan since September 2020. These tactics involve efforts beyond regular deterrence and assurance, aiming to achieve security objectives without resorting to direct and significant force.
