Raging Teesta River Cuts Off North Sikkim, Rescue Efforts Underway
North Sikkim has been severely affected as the raging Teesta River has cut off the region, prompting rescue operations to be launched on an urgent basis. A temporary bamboo bridge has been constructed at Chungthang, linking it to Pegong. However, roads and bridges beyond Pegong that connect North Sikkim to the rest of the state have been washed away due to the devastating flooding.
Priority on Temporary Bridge
The construction of the temporary bridge was deemed a top priority as it facilitates the transportation of stranded tourists and local residents from Chungthang to the other side. This bridge has been instrumental in rescuing 50 stranded tourists from the disaster-affected Lachen Valley. The rescue operation was carried out by personnel involved in Project Swastik of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), who braved harsh weather conditions to establish the first composite footbridge over the Teesta River at Chungthang.
Swift Response by Indo-Tibetan Border Police
The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) also played a crucial role in the rescue efforts, utilizing a zip line to rescue 56 civilians at Chungthang. Among the individuals rescued were 52 men and four women.
The severe flooding and the resulting isolation of North Sikkim have prompted a concerted and swift response from multiple agencies and organizations to ensure the safety and well-being of those affected by the disaster. The construction of temporary bridges and the use of innovative methods like zip lines have been instrumental in these efforts.
