Congress MP Digvijaya Singh Summoned Over Alleged Defamatory Social Media Post Against RSS Leader: Legal Action Unfolds

The Thane Magistrate Court has taken a significant step in response to allegations of defamation by issuing a summons to Congress MP Digvijaya Singh. The summons comes as a result of an alleged defamatory social media post made by Singh against Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leader Madhav Sadashivrao Golwalkar. Vivek Champanerkar, an RSS worker from Thane, filed the defamation case. Singh has been instructed to appear before the court on November 20.

Defamation Allegations against Congress MP

The controversy began when Digvijaya Singh faced legal action following his remarks about Golwalkar, the second Sarsanghchalak (or head) of the RSS, a prominent right-wing organization in India. Singh’s alleged defamatory comments led to the initiation of a First Information Report (FIR) against him at Indore’s Tukoganj Police Station.

The FIR invoked sections 153A, 469, 500, and 505 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Singh’s actions came under scrutiny after he posted a tweet on July 8, in which he shared a poster. The tweet was captioned, “Do you know what Guru Golwalkar ji’s thoughts were for the Dalits, backwards, and Muslims and on the right on national water, forest, and land?” The tweet included a quote attributed to Golwalkar, suggesting that he preferred British rule over granting equal rights to Dalits, backwards, and Muslims.

RSS Official Responds

In response to Singh’s tweet, Sunil Ambekar, a senior RSS official, issued a reply on the platform (formerly Twitter). He dismissed Singh’s tweet as “factless” and warned of the potential to incite social disharmony. Ambekar asserted that the photoshopped image and false quote were intended to tarnish the reputation of the Sangh. He emphasized that Golwalkar had never made such a statement and had dedicated his life to eradicating social discrimination.

The legal summons represents a significant development in this ongoing dispute, and the court’s decision on November 20 will determine the course of action moving forward.
