In the first phase of the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 in India, two polling officials in West Tripura district were suspended for allegedly allowing election-related malpractices. Dr. Vishal Kumar, the Returning Officer for West Tripura, revealed that these officials were stationed in a polling station under the Ramanagar assembly constituency. He also highlighted that the first phase included the West parliamentary constituency and a by-poll in the 7-Ramnagar Assembly Constituency.

Complaints from various political parties were addressed by the senior official. While some reports of intimidation, threats, and poll malpractices were received, many of these allegations were found to be false upon verification by response teams. Nonetheless, some arrests were made in Mohanpur constituency, and preventive arrests were conducted in Ramanagar assembly constituency. The reason behind the suspension of the two polling officials was the malfunctioning CCTV cameras in their polling station, which allowed outsiders to enter with voters. Tripura recorded the highest turnout at 80.46%, with Belonia sub-division of South district leading at 85.64% and 7-Ramnagar Assembly Constituency registering the lowest at 68.64%.

Voter Turnout and Opposition Demands

Tripura led the voter turnout with 80.46%, followed by West Bengal at 77.57%. Tamil Nadu saw 67% turnout for all 39 Lok Sabha seats, while Uttarakhand recorded 54.50% across its five parliamentary seats. The Election Commission reported a high voter turnout despite a heat wave. However, the INDIA bloc in Tripura has urged the Election Commission to countermand the polls for the West Tripura Lok Sabha constituency and Ramnagar assembly constituency. They cited widespread instances of poll manipulation, including booth jamming, intimidation, and proxy voting.

The opposition alliance, consisting of eight political parties with CPIM and Congress as dominant forces, held a joint press briefing post-elections. They requested the Election Commission to countermand the polls and conduct fresh elections under enhanced security measures. The Lok Sabha elections in India will proceed in seven phases from April 19 to June 1, with results expected on June 4.
