Congress’s Embrace of Caste Survey Gains Momentum
In the lead-up to state and general elections, Congress leaders, including Mallikarjung Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, have been emphasizing the promise of a state-wide caste survey should they come to power. This sudden shift towards supporting a caste survey is becoming a pivotal issue in the upcoming elections, drawing attention from both politicians and the public.
Bihar’s Bold Move Sets the Tone
Bihar took the lead by publishing its caste survey data, sparking a fervent discussion around this topic. Rahul Gandhi has made it a central issue, particularly in the context of the Karnataka election. His stance prompted a response from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which further galvanized the Congress party’s determination to push for a comprehensive caste survey.
Growing Support for Caste Survey
Notably, other parties in the newly formed Opposition alliance, INDIA, have also expressed their demand for a caste survey. While the Congress Working Committee had not officially endorsed the idea of a caste survey in the past, the party’s stance has evolved over the years. While former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi opposed caste-based reservations during the Mandal agitation, the party has since adopted a more supportive stance. With the implementation of the Mandal Commission report and various Supreme Court judgments, the Congress has publicly backed the call for caste-based reservations and a census that includes caste enumeration.
Congress’s Unified Message
To present a united front and emphasize its unwavering commitment to a caste survey, the Congress aims to leverage this issue as a potent mobilization tool. This strategy is intended to resonate not only in the Hindi heartland but also in southern states where OBC politics holds significant sway. During discussions about election preparations, alliances, and allegations of harassment of Opposition parties by law enforcement agencies, the Congress will underscore its strong support for a caste survey, asserting its importance in the upcoming state and general elections.
