11 Arrested for Immigration Fraud in Delhi: Operation Targets Illegal Travel Agents

In a significant crackdown, the Delhi Police announced the arrest of 11 individuals involved in duping people by promising to send them to foreign countries. The case came to light on September 3 when security officials at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport apprehended a passenger named Deepak Verma, who had traveled to London using someone else’s passport and had returned to India. Upon interrogation, Verma revealed that he had been assisted in his journey by a travel agent named Barinder Singh from Punjab’s Fatehgarh Sahib, for which he paid Rs 17 lakh. This incident occurred in 2021.

A case was registered under sections 419 (cheating by impersonation) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code, along with provisions of the Passports Act, at the IGI Airport police station. A dedicated team was formed to apprehend Barinder Singh. On September 5, Singh was arrested at the Capitol Hills Hotel in Greater Kailash, Delhi, by a team from the IGI police station. Singh confessed to facilitating illegal travel arrangements and taking money from people seeking to travel abroad. He disclosed his involvement with Deepak Verma in 2021 when he offered to send Verma to the UK, collecting a total of Rs 17 lakh from him.

Following this case, the IGI Airport police initiated a drive and, in the past 30 days, arrested approximately 10 other agents allegedly engaged in immigration fraud.

Among those arrested were individuals with aliases such as Satnam Singh (Jaggi), Jaskaran Singh, Gurdeep Singh (Bitto), Sushil Kumar Kaushik, Sandeep Singh, Randeep Singh, Pishora Singh, Sumit Kumar Yadav, Mohammad Suhail, and Anjali. They were apprehended separately for their involvement in fraudulently sending passengers to various countries.
