Spotify Plans Price Hike to Bolster Profits

Spotify Technology SA is set to implement a price increase for its audio service in key markets, aiming to bolster long-term profitability. The hike, ranging from $1 to $2 a month, will first be rolled out in the UK, Australia, and Pakistan by April’s end, followed by the US later this year.

This move is intended to offset the costs of audiobooks, a recently introduced service. Spotify will introduce a new basic tier offering music and podcasts at the current premium plan price, sans audiobooks, while also considering other pricing options like a “supremium” plan for high-fidelity audio.

Spotify’s venture into diverse audio content seeks to diversify revenue streams beyond the music industry, where it pays substantial royalties. The success of this pricing strategy, amidst competition from Apple and Amazon, underscores Spotify’s evolution into a multi-dimensional audio platform.

Despite potential concerns from music industry partners, Spotify’s pricing adjustments reflect a broader trend in the streaming landscape, as services explore novel revenue-generating avenues beyond traditional subscriptions.
