US Urges Investigation into Electoral Irregularities in Pakistan
The US State Department spokesperson, Matthew Miller, urged the newly elected Pakistan government led by Shehbaz Sharif to thoroughly investigate reported electoral irregularities and challenges raised by political parties. While acknowledging the competitive nature of the election with millions of people expressing their voices, Miller emphasized the need for a comprehensive examination of irregularities and challenges. The US committed to working with the newly formed government while encouraging transparency in addressing concerns related to the electoral process.
Shehbaz Sharif Elected as Pakistan’s PM
Following the election, Shehbaz Sharif secured 201 votes in the National Assembly on Sunday, defeating his rival Omar Ayub Khan, who was backed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). The formation of the government involved negotiations between PML-N, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), and other parties, including MQM-P, PML-Q, BAP, PML-Z, and IPP.
US Condemns Internet Shutdowns in Pakistan
Addressing concerns about freedom of speech in Pakistan, the US State Department spokesperson condemned government-imposed shutdowns of internet platforms. Miller expressed support for freedom of expression and emphasized the importance of respecting fundamental freedoms during engagements with Pakistani officials. The swearing-in ceremony of Shehbaz Sharif took place amid protests by PTI, alleging rigging in the general elections on February 8.
Challenges and Protests Following Elections
The 12th national general election in Pakistan on February 8 faced allegations of rigging and witnessed the shutdown of cellular and internet services. PTI has conducted nationwide protests against the alleged rigging, creating a complex political landscape in the aftermath of the elections.
Continued US Engagement
The US commitment to engaging with Pakistan underlines the importance of addressing electoral concerns transparently and upholding fundamental freedoms. The swearing-in ceremony marked a significant development in Pakistani politics, but challenges and protests indicate the need for continued scrutiny and dialogue.
