External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar recently addressed a gathering of esteemed Indian-Americans at India House in Washington, where he expressed his admiration for the scientists responsible for India’s successful Chandrayaan-3 mission. During this event, he shared captivating insights into the events of August 23, when Chandrayaan-3 achieved a historic lunar south pole landing.

Prime Minister Modi’s Involvement in the Mission

Jaishankar revealed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was in Johannesburg for the 15th BRICS Summit from August 22-24, remained closely connected to the mission’s progress. Despite his international commitments, Prime Minister Modi stayed engaged with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) team. Jaishankar highlighted the importance of having reassurance during such tense moments, praising Modi’s ability to provide that reassurance to the nation and the world.

As the Lander Module of Chandrayaan-3 successfully touched down on the lunar surface, Prime Minister Modi virtually connected with the ISRO team at the Mission Operations Complex (MOX) in Bengaluru from Johannesburg. Once it was confirmed that the mission had gone smoothly, Modi decided to head straight to Bengaluru to personally congratulate the scientists. Jaishankar had the privilege of accompanying him on this remarkable visit to the ISRO’s Telemetry Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) on August 26.

Jaishankar was deeply impressed by the ordinary yet exceptional demeanor of the ISRO scientists. He engaged in conversations with them, inquiring about their level of tension and concern during the mission. Their unwavering confidence and conviction left a lasting impression on him.

India Joins Lunar Soft Landing Pioneers

With the triumphant Chandrayaan-3 mission, India proudly joined the exclusive club of countries that have mastered the technology of soft landing on the Moon, following in the footsteps of the US, China, and the erstwhile Soviet Union.

This achievement not only signifies India’s prowess in space exploration but also serves as a testament to the remarkable dedication and expertise of its scientists. India’s Chandrayaan-3 mission has paved the way for further advancements in space exploration and scientific discovery.
