Congress MP P. Chidambaram Asserts Role of Commission Amid Cauvery Water Dispute
Chidambaram’s Call for Adherence to Commission’s Decisions
Amid the escalating tussle over the Cauvery water-sharing issue between the southern Indian states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, Congress Member of Parliament (MP) P. Chidambaram made a notable statement. On Saturday, he emphasized the critical role of the designated commission in resolving the longstanding dispute. Chidambaram, representing Tamil Nadu in the Parliament, stressed that it is imperative for both states to honor the decisions reached by the commission tasked with addressing the Cauvery water-sharing issue.
Cauvery Water Dispute: Historical Context
The governments of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have been embroiled in a prolonged and contentious dispute over the sharing of Cauvery river waters. This disagreement holds immense significance as the Cauvery river is a lifeline for the people in both states, providing essential sustenance and resources.

Changing Water Release Orders: Impact and Controversy
The Cauvery Water Regulatory Committee (CWRC) recently issued orders pertaining to the release of Cauvery water. Initially, Karnataka was directed to release 5,000 cusecs of water from Biligundlu, an allocation that sparked significant controversy. However, this order was subsequently modified, specifying a reduced release of 3,000 cusecs from September 28 to October 15, 2023. Karnataka cited severe drought conditions in certain regions of the state as the primary reason for its reluctance to supply water to Tamil Nadu. In response, the Tamil Nadu government accused Karnataka of misrepresenting facts to the nation regarding water supply.
Legal Recourse and Farmer Protests
The escalating dispute has prompted legal actions and widespread protests. Karnataka’s Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced the state’s intention to file a review petition with the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) and the Supreme Court on September 30. This decision is grounded in the assertion that Karnataka lacks the necessary water reserves to fulfill the earlier, higher-volume order. Meanwhile, farmers across Karnataka have been staging protests since the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) ordered the state to release 5,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu for 15 days, commencing on September 13.
Public Outcry and Political Condemnation
The Cauvery water-sharing issue has triggered public protests and political condemnation. In Madurai, the Naam Tamilar Katchi Party organized protests, vehemently condemning the Congress-led Karnataka government’s stance on the matter. Sattai Durai Murugan, the NTK Party’s youth wing secretary, declared their intention to organize massive protests should Karnataka fail to comply with the court-ordered release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu.
Judicial Standpoint: Court’s Decision on Water Release
The Supreme Court bench has opted not to interfere with the order issued by the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) instructing Karnataka to release 5,000 cusecs of water daily to Tamil Nadu, at least for the present period.
The Cauvery water dispute remains a complex and highly charged issue, with significant implications for the well-being and agriculture of both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
