PTI Appeals Election Rigging Allegations to Pakistan’s Supreme Court
In a dramatic turn of events, Imran Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has taken its grievances to the Supreme Court, challenging the outcome of the February 8 general elections. The move comes amidst allegations of widespread rigging that Khan himself has labeled as the ‘Mother of All Rigging.’
Claims of Mandate Theft: PTI’s Battle Against Election Fraud
PTI alleges that despite initially securing 180 seats in the National Assembly through independent candidates backed by the party, the impact of rigging slashed their tally to a mere 92 seats. This claim suggests a systematic effort to undermine PTI’s mandate, denying them a legitimate shot at returning to power.
Sher Afzal Marwat, a senior PTI leader, addressed the media, emphasizing the party’s determination to combat poll fraud. Marwat not only challenged the election results but also took issue with the appointment of Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja and other members of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
Legal Maneuvers: PTI’s Supreme Court Petition and Previous Dispositions
The party’s petition to the Supreme Court comes just two days after the dismissal of a similar plea seeking to annul the elections. In that case, a former Army officer faced consequences, with the court imposing a fine of ₹0.5 million for failing to appear after filing the petition. PTI’s legal challenge signals a persistent effort to rectify what they perceive as an unjust electoral outcome.
Coalition Dynamics: PML-N and PPP’s Power-Sharing Deal
As PTI battles the alleged rigging, the political landscape sees the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) strategizing a power-sharing deal. With PML-N securing 75 seats and PPP claiming 54, they fall short of the 133 seats required to independently form a government. This collaboration could usher in a new coalition government, with Shehbaz Sharif as the prime minister candidate and Asif Ali Zardari as the projected president. Such a pact may effectively dim Imran Khan’s chances of returning to power, creating a significant shift in Pakistan’s political dynamics.
