CBI Raids Former JK Governors Premises in Kiru Hydropower Project Corruption Probe
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) intensified its probe on Thursday, conducting searches at the premises of former Jammu and Kashmir governor Satya Pal Malik and 29 other locations in connection with alleged corruption surrounding the Kiru Hydropower project. This operation, launched with approximately 100 officers deployed, targeted 30 locations across various cities.
Alleged Corruption in Awarding Civil Works
The focus of the investigation revolves around suspected corruption in the awarding of civil works for the Kiru Hydro Electric Power Project (HEP), valued at Rs 2,200 crore. The CBI is delving into the intricacies of the case, aiming to unearth malpractices associated with the contract awarded to a private company in 2019.
Bribery Allegations by Former Governor
Satya Pal Malik, who served as the governor of Jammu and Kashmir from August 23, 2018, to October 30, 2019, claims to have been offered a hefty Rs 300-crore bribe. The alleged bribe was purportedly tied to clearing crucial files, including those related to the Kiru Hydropower project. These serious allegations have added a layer of complexity to the ongoing investigation.
Key Figures Booked by CBI
The CBI has not only targeted Satya Pal Malik but also filed cases against key figures involved in the Kiru HEP project. Former chairman of the Chenab Valley Power Projects (P) Ltd, Navin Kumar Chaudhary, along with former officials M S Babu, M K Mittal, and Arun Kumar Mishra, are among those booked. The agency has extended its scrutiny to Patel Engineering Ltd, a company implicated in the FIR.
The CBI’s investigation has revealed lapses in the decision-making process, as documented in the FIR. Despite a decision to re-tender through e-tendering and reverse auction after the cancellation of the ongoing tendering process, the awarding of the tender to Patel Engineering Ltd allegedly did not align with the decisions taken in board meetings.
In January, the CBI had already conducted searches at the premises of five individuals linked to this corruption case, indicating the agency’s persistent efforts to unveil the truth surrounding the Kiru Hydropower project.
