Supreme Court Stays Parliament Ethics Committee Proceedings Against West Bengal Officials
The Supreme Court issued a notice to concerned respondents and stayed the Parliament Ethics Committee proceedings against senior West Bengal officials related to the Sandeshkhali protest. The bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud stayed the proceedings, responding to a plea filed by West Bengal’s Chief Secretary, Director General and Inspector General of Police, and other officials.
Allegations of Misconduct and Brutality
The Parliament Ethics Committee had issued a notice to West Bengal Chief Secretary, DGP, and others based on a complaint by BJP MP Sukanta Majumdar. The complaint alleged misconduct, brutality, and life-threatening injuries by police officials and district administration during the Sandeshkhali protest. The senior officials sought the Supreme Court’s intervention, arguing that the action was illegal and unconstitutional.
Petition Challenges Committee’s Jurisdiction
In the petition, the West Bengal officials argued that the Parliament Ethics Committee’s action was without jurisdiction, unwarranted, and unconstitutional. They urged the Supreme Court to declare the committee’s action illegal, and restrain them from further proceedings based on the complaint. The officials expressed concern over leaving their public duties to appear before the committee, emphasizing that privileges are limited to activities within the House.
