New York Judge Orders Trump and Trump Organization to Pay $355 Million Fine in Civil Fraud Case
A New York judge issued a ruling on Friday, instructing former US President Donald Trump and the Trump Organization to pay a fine of nearly USD 355 million in a civil fraud case. The judgement spans 90 pages and prohibits Trump from acting as a company director in New York state for three years. Donald Trump’s sons, Donald Trump Jr and Eric Trump, are also implicated, each facing a USD 4 million fine and a two-year prohibition from serving as directors. The judgement follows the finding of the Trumps’ liability in inflating property values significantly. Trump and his sons have consistently denied any wrongdoing, with Trump branding the case as a “fraud on me” and a “political witch hunt.”
Trump’s Reaction and Legal Response
Donald Trump has criticized the case as a politically motivated effort against him. His lawyer, Alina Habba, referred to the ruling as a “manifest injustice” and the outcome of a “multi-year, politically fueled witch hunt.” The trial, which lasted over two months, involved testimonies from 40 witnesses, including the former president, top Trump Organization executives, and Trump’s adult children. The financial repercussions for Trump could be substantial, with this fine of USD 354.8 million, coupled with another USD 83.3 million judgement in a defamation case involving writer E Jean Carroll.
Impact on Trump’s Financial Standing
The combined impact of the significant fines, totaling hundreds of millions of dollars, could have a substantial effect on Donald Trump’s financial standing. This ruling adds to the legal challenges the former president is facing, contributing to a complex legal landscape for Trump and the Trump Organization.
