Moscow claims that these individuals, including Deputy Defence Minister James Cartlidge, Deputy National Security Adviser Sarah MacIntosh, and Director of Submarines Simon Asquith, have been attempting to demonize Russia and fuel the conflict in Ukraine.

Accusations of Russophobia and Subversive Actions

Russia’s foreign ministry accused British representatives of being “Russophobically charged” and attempting to discredit Russia’s constitutional system and socio-political processes. The statement points to alleged subversive work by British and Western educational institutions, describing them as “brain trusts” contributing to London’s activities against Russia.

Prominent Academics and Experts Targeted

Among those targeted are renowned historians Orlando Figes, Norman Davies, Timothy Garton Ash, Rob Johnson, and David Abulafia. Experts such as Roy Allison of Oxford, Graeme Robertson of the University of North Carolina, Calder Walton of Harvard, and James Sherr of the International Centre for Defence & Security in Tallinn are also included in the sanctions.

The imposition of personal sanctions on these individuals comes against the backdrop of heightened tensions between Russia and the West, particularly concerning the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The move further underscores the diplomatic challenges faced by the international community in navigating this complex geopolitical landscape.
