LG-Sinha Leads Wildlife Board Meeting, Approves Key Strategies for Biodiversity Management in Jk
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha presided over the fifth session of the Wildlife Board for the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) at the Civil Secretariat today. The meeting saw the presence of key officials including Atal Dulloo, Chief Secretary; Dheeraj Gupta, Additional Chief Secretary of the Department of Forest, Ecology, and Environment; A. K. Choudhary, Special DG Crime; Shailendra Kumar, Principal Secretary of the Agriculture Production Department; Roshan Jaggi, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests & HoFF; and Sarvesh Rai, PCCF / Chief Wildlife Warden, J&K.
The discussions during the meeting centered on crucial strategies for the sustainable management of the region’s diverse biodiversity and the holistic development of wildlife habitats. In-principle approval was granted for various agenda points, aiming to fortify the wildlife ecosystem.
Emphasizing the need for heightened awareness and conservation efforts, Lt Governor Sinha instructed the relevant authorities to promote the protection of valuable wildlife resources. Additionally, he called for a series of promotional activities to enhance the visibility of significant projects like the Jambu Zoo at prominent public locations.
The Lt Governor also scrutinized the proposal for the expansion of Jambu Zoo and requested an action taken report on the directives issued during the previous Board meeting.
Several agenda points were deliberated, including the Kandori Ski Lift in Gulmarg Wildlife Sanctuary, the construction of Yatri Niwas and Disaster Management Centre by Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board at Bahu Conservation Reserve in Jammu, Chhat Zorawar Operational Track, procurement of vehicles for Man-Animal Conflict Management, various Water Supply Schemes, and road projects.
During the session, Lt Governor Sinha inaugurated the Wildlife Office Complex at Raj Bagh Srinagar and unveiled a Coffee Table Book and a short film on Jambu Zoo. The Lt Governor also released a report on the Biodiversity Assessment of Wild Fauna (Mammals, Birds, and Butterflies) and Flora in Jasrota Wildlife Sanctuary in Kathua, J&K. Additionally, a booklet titled “Conservation Triumph-2024” on Kashmir’s Wetland Conservation Reserves was also released.
Among the attendees were Dr. Mandeep Kumar Bhandari, Principal Secretary to the Lt Governor; Shiv Anant Tayal, Secretary of Tribal Affairs; eminent Conservationists, Ecologists, Environmentalists, representatives of the Army, Botanical Survey of India, National Society on Water Resources, Wetlands & Forests, and other board members.
