Snowfall and Heavy Rains Bring Relief to Kashmir after Prolonged Dry Spell.

Snowfall and Heavy Rains Bring Relief to Kashmir after Prolonged Dry Spell.

Snowfall and Rains Bring Relief to the Valley

The prolonged dry spell that had gripped the picturesque Kashmir Valley has finally come to a welcome end. Mother Nature’s blessings were felt across the region as snowfall blanketed the upper reaches, while heavy rains showered the plains of Kashmir. This climatic shift has brought about a significant drop in temperatures, offering much-needed respite to the locals. According to the experts at the Meteorological Department (MeT), this precipitation marks the beginning of a wetter period, with forecasts predicting more rains in the coming week.

    Snowfall in the Upper Reaches

One of the most remarkable aspects of this climatic shift is the season’s first snowfall in several areas, including Zojila and Razdan Top. This picturesque transformation of the landscape has not only delighted residents but also raised hopes for a prosperous season ahead. The snow-covered peaks serve as a reminder of the valley’s breathtaking beauty and its unique charm.

    Rains Revive the Plains

While the upper reaches celebrated the snowfall, the overnight rains drenched the plains of Kashmir. These showers have contributed to a noticeable reduction in temperature throughout the region. Locals have embraced this sudden change in weather, which brings with it the promise of rejuvenated surroundings and replenished water sources.

    Repercussions of Deficient Precipitation

The arrival of rains has been a much-awaited event in Kashmir, primarily because the region experienced a prolonged period of deficient precipitation during the past two months, spanning from August to September. This lack of rainfall has had severe consequences, including a drop in the water levels of major water bodies like the River Jhelum and its tributaries. The resulting water scarcity has been felt in numerous places, and authorities have had to grapple with inadequate water supply.

    MeT’s Forecast and Temperature Outlook

Sonum Lotus, the Director of the Meteorological Department, shared insights into the weather conditions. While there is no significant change expected in the coming days, a slight drop in minimum temperatures of one or two degrees Celsius is likely. However, he reassured that no major temperature decline is on the horizon. Additionally, he mentioned that a two-day wet spell is in the forecast starting from September 28, with lighter rains anticipated during this period. As for the remainder of the month, there are no indications of a significant wet spell.
