Tamil Nadu Farmers Stage Protest in Cauvery River Over Water Dispute with Karnataka

Farmers in Tamil Nadu Demand Release of Cauvery Water*In a demonstration of their grievances, a group of farmers in Tamil Nadu‘s Trichy staged a protest on Sunday within the waters of the Cauvery River. Their primary demand is the immediate release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu.

    Simultaneous Protests in Karnataka

On the other side of the dispute, farmers in Karnataka’s Mandya region are also actively protesting. Their objective is to prevent the release of water from Karnataka dams to Tamil Nadu. This conflict has triggered a series of protests across Karnataka.

Water Release Order by Cauvery Water Management Authority

The protests were ignited by the recent order issued by the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA). The order directed the state of Karnataka to release 5,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu for a duration of 15 days, effective from September 13.

    Legal Intervention and Court’s Decision

The matter escalated when the Tamil Nadu government approached the judiciary for an increase in its daily share of Cauvery water from 5,000 to 7,200 cusecs. The request was aimed at addressing Tamil Nadu’s water requirements. However, a judicial bench comprising Justices BR Gavai, PS Narasimha, and Prashant Kumar Mishra declined to interfere in the ongoing water dispute between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

The court emphasized that both the CWMA and the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) are actively engaged in regular meetings and monitoring of water requirements every 15 days.

    Continuing Water Tensions

The dispute over the distribution of Cauvery River water has been a longstanding issue between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The recent protests and legal actions reflect the deep-rooted challenges in managing this vital water resource.
