    S Somanath, the ISRO chief, provided an optimistic update on the recent PSLV XPoSat launch, highlighting its successful performance. Speaking at the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) convocation in Hyderabad, he expressed contentment with the satellite’s functionality and the activation of its instruments, awaiting results shortly.

    Looking ahead to 2024, Somanath emphasized the eventful nature of the upcoming year, revealing numerous proposed launches. Mentioning the next GSLV launch, INSAT-3DS, a climate and weather satellite crucial for monitoring cyclones, weather patterns, and environmental factors, he anticipated its launch in January or possibly early February.

    Underlining 2024 as the ‘Gaganyaan year’, he disclosed various missions associated with the Gaganyaan human spaceflight program, alongside commercial and GSLV launches. Additionally, he highlighted a pivotal moment in ISRO’s solar mission, the Aditya-L1, with a significant manoeuver scheduled for January 6, positioning the spacecraft into its final orbit around Lagrange point 1, about 1.5 million km from Earth, to observe the Sun.

    Somanath stressed ISRO’s commitment to societal benefits, citing the National Remote Sensing Agency’s focus on leveraging space applications for agriculture, weather forecasting, and more. Addressing challenges in the sector, he emphasized fostering economic activities while ensuring cost efficiency and extended service life for various missions.

    Acknowledging Chandrayaan-III’s success achieved at significantly lower costs, he encouraged students during the convocation to embody qualities such as passion, excellence, focus, and a thirst for learning for success, both personally and professionally. He also highlighted the importance of learning from failures, emphasizing the resilience needed to overcome setbacks, citing the successful recovery from the SSLV’s inaugural launch failure among ISRO’s achievements.
