Panic at J-K Petrol Stations as Strike and Surge in Demand Deplete Stocks
Jammu/Srinagar, January 2 (IANS) Despite official assurances of ample petroleum and LPG reserves in the union territory, long queues of motorists, including two and three-wheeler owners, crowded petrol stations in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday.
The surge in demand followed a strike by oil tanker drivers and truckers protesting against a recent law imposing a ten-year imprisonment and a fine of Rs 7 lakh for hit-and-run cases. Vehicle owners anxiously flocked to petrol stations, not only to refill their tanks but also to purchase extra petrol/diesel in jerry cans for storage.
This panic buying triggered a domino effect, with one petrol station after another running out of supplies due to the unprecedented rush. As one station depleted its stocks, frantic buyers swarmed neighboring filling stations, leading to a sequential shutdown of petrol pumps due to the shortage of petrol/diesel.
Despite the divisional administration’s statements assuring a month’s worth of petroleum and LPG reserves in the union territory, these reassurances seemed to be ignored. The situation created an atmosphere as if the world was on the verge of depleting all its petroleum stocks, leaving petrol/diesel buyers uncertain about tomorrow.
