
Chennai Court Rejects Tamil Nadu Minister’s Bail Plea.

In a significant turn of events, a Chennai court has recently rejected the bail plea of Tamil Nadu minister V Senthil Balaji. This decision comes amidst an ongoing legal battle surrounding his arrest in connection with an alleged cash-for-jobs scam dating back to his tenure as a cabinet member in the Jayalalithaa government. The Enforcement Directorate apprehended Mr. Balaji in June on charges of money laundering, sparking a massive political uproar that even embroiled the state’s Chief Minister, MK Stalin, and Governor RN Ravi in a heated dispute over the minister’s removal.

The courtroom drama unfolded with the court extending Senthil Balaji’s judicial custody until September 15, mere days before the Supreme Court upheld a Madras High Court order supporting his arrest. Despite his legal woes, Mr. Balaji remains a minister without a portfolio, a decision made by Chief Minister Stalin as a demonstration of solidarity. However, this move did not sit well with the Madras High Court, which questioned the Chief Minister’s judgment.
The High Court’s Stern Message
The Madras High Court, in a stern tone, advised Chief Minister Stalin to reconsider his stance, emphasizing that political considerations should not override public morality, good governance, and constitutional ethics. The court cited a Supreme Court judgment that suggested caution when including individuals with pending criminal charges in the cabinet, even extending this advice to the Prime Minister if necessary.”In the present case, V Senthil Balaji is a minister without portfolio, meaning… no work is allotted to him… no purpose is served by just ceremonially retaining him as a minister,” the bench stated, emphasizing the redundancy of his current role.
A Dramatic Arrest and Health Concerns
V Senthil Balaji’s arrest by the Enforcement Directorate was nothing short of dramatic, involving hours of questioning followed by hospitalization due to chest pain. Heart-wrenching visuals of him weeping in the ambulance and on his way to the hospital circulated widely. Subsequently, an angiogram was conducted, and he was advised to undergo a cardiac bypass surgery.
