Indian Navy Warship Investigates Drone Attack on Merchant Vessel
The Indian Navy warship INS Mormugao has reached the India-bound merchant vessel MV Chem Pluto, which was reportedly ‘attacked’ by an Iranian drone, to ascertain details of the incident.
The Indian Navy has initiated an investigation to determine whether the drone used in the attack was launched from long range or from a nearby vessel.
The motor vessel CHEM PLUTO, a Liberia-flagged, Japanese-owned, and Netherlands-operated chemical tanker, was struck by a one-way attack drone fired from Iran in the Indian Ocean, 200 nautical miles from the coast of India. The Indian Coast Guard ship Vikram is escorting MV Chem Pluto, and both are expected to reach the Mumbai coast.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday, is the latest in a series of attacks on commercial shipping in the region, with the Pentagon stating that this was the “seventh Iranian attack on commercial shipping since 2021”
MV Chem Pluto, carrying 20 Indian and one Vietnamese crew member, caught fire after the suspected drone attack but was later secured by the Indian Coast Guard.
The vessel had commenced its voyage from the UAE and was bound for New Mangalore port.
The Indian Coast Guard has been providing assistance, and the vessel is making its way towards Mumbai after undertaking damage assessment and repairs on its power generation systems.
