The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chairman, S Somanath, announced that India’s pioneering solar mission, Aditya-L1, is expected to reach its destination, the Lagrangian point (L1), situated 1.5 million kilometers away from Earth, by January 6. Launched on September 2 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Aditya-L1 is a space-based observatory aiming to study the Sun from a halo orbit at L1, a significant milestone for Indian space exploration.

Somanath disclosed the anticipated arrival at L1 during the Bharatiya Vigyan Sammelan organized by Vijnana Bharati, an NGO dedicated to advancing science outreach. “Once it reaches the L1 point, we have to fire the engine once again so that it does not go further,” explained Somanath, emphasizing the crucial engine maneuver required to stabilize the observatory in orbit at L1.

Upon successfully reaching its destination, Aditya-L1 is poised to observe various solar events for the next five years. Somanath highlighted the global significance of the data gathered, stating its relevance not only to India but to the world, aiding in comprehending solar dynamics and their impact on life.

Addressing the importance of technological advancement for India, Somanath spoke about ISRO’s plan to develop an indigenous space station, the ‘Bharatiya space station,’ in alignment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision during the ‘Amrit Kaal.’ Additionally, he emphasized India’s support for emerging space actors and the economy’s growth in the space sector.

Somanath acknowledged India’s strategic focus on sectors where the nation can excel, underlining the country’s ambition to become a technological powerhouse while fostering innovation and leadership in space exploration.
