GN Azad Expresses Disappointment Over SC Verdict Upholding Abrogation of Article 370, Citing Displeasure Among People of Jammu and Kashmir
Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad conveyed disappointment over the Supreme Court’s validation of the abrogation of Article 370.
He voiced concerns regarding the local sentiment, stating that people in the region were discontent with the verdict, although he appreciated the court’s defined timeline for assembly polls.
As the head of the Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP), Azad highlighted potential consequences of removing Article 35A, warning of exacerbated unemployment due to increased competition from individuals across the country vying for jobs.
He expressed dismay, citing this decision as a unanimous one that did not resonate well with the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
Azad emphasized the historical significance of Articles 370 and 35A, noting their sentimental attachment and their incorporation into the “constitution of Jammu and Kashmir” by Maharaja Hari Singh to safeguard local interests.
He anticipated negative economic impacts, foreseeing rising land prices and heightened unemployment in a region heavily reliant on tourism.
Critically, Azad criticized the hasty decision to abrogate Article 370 in August, labeling it a mistake and highlighting the absence of consultation with political parties in Jammu and Kashmir.
Despite his disappointment, Azad welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to schedule assembly polls, considering it a favorable move towards restoring the state’s status.
Meanwhile, in its verdict, the Supreme Court upheld the Union Government’s abrogation of Article 370, emphasizing the non-justiciability of decisions taken by the Centre on behalf of a State.
The Court reaffirmed Article 370 as a temporary provision due to war conditions in the State, dismissing arguments suggesting the irreversibility of actions during Presidential rule in Jammu and Kashmir.
