The Foundation of the Legal Profession: Integrity
In a thought-provoking address, Chief Justice of India, Dhananjay Chandrachud, emphasized the critical role of integrity in the legal profession. Speaking at an event titled ‘Enhancing collaboration between Advocates & Judges: Towards strengthening the legal system,’ the Chief Justice made it clear that the legal profession’s destiny is intertwined with the maintenance of integrity.
A Slow Erosion: The Danger of Compromises
CJI Chandrachud highlighted that integrity isn’t eroded by a single thunderstorm but through the gradual erosion of principles due to small concessions and compromises made by lawyers and judges. He emphasized that the legal community carries its conscience and integrity is the bedrock of the profession. Maintaining integrity, according to him, is a determining factor in whether the profession will thrive or self-destruct.
Mutual Respect: A Pillar of the Legal System
The Chief Justice underscored the importance of mutual respect between lawyers and judges. He stressed that lawyers gain respect when they show respect to judges, and judges earn respect when they respect lawyers. This mutual respect is an essential component of the justice system, reminding all that they are integral parts of the same wheel of justice.
Gender Equality: A Collective Responsibility
Moving beyond integrity, CJI Chandrachud tackled gender equality in the legal profession. He emphasized that gender issues aren’t exclusive to women but are everyone’s concern. Creating an equal opportunity profession is a significant challenge, and the composition of today’s legal profession will define its future. The CJI pointed out that the selection of judges today reflects the status of society 20-30 years ago, making it crucial to ensure women have an appropriate voice in the legal system.
Advocates & Judges Collaborate
The Chief Justice’s lecture took place at Mahatma Gandhi Mission University, organized by the Aurangabad Bench of the Bombay High Court and the Advocate Association of Bombay High Court. The event aimed to enhance collaboration between advocates and judges, strengthening the legal system.
Key Attendees
Several prominent figures attended the event, including Justices Abhay Oka, Deepankar Datta, Devendra Kumar Upadhyay, PV Varale, SV Gangapurwala, and RV Ghuge. Advocate General Virendra Saraf, President of Advocate Association NC Jadhav, and Secretary RK Ingole were also present, demonstrating the significance of the discussions held.
