Rescue Operations Intensify for 41 Trapped Laborers in Uttarakhand Tunnel
Efforts to rescue 41 laborers trapped in the Silkyara tunnel in Uttarakhand are intensifying with both vertical and manual drilling operations progressing simultaneously.
Progress in Vertical and Manual Drilling
- Vertical Drilling Resumed: After a pause last night, vertical drilling has resumed, with about 43 meters completed out of the required 86 meters. Completing the remaining work may take an additional 40 to 50 hours.
- Manual Drilling Considered More Feasible: Officials from the vertical drilling team believe that the manual drilling operation, initiated from the tunnel’s mouth, is a more viable rescue option and likely to be completed sooner.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister’s Update
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, closely monitoring the situation, reported that a total of 52 meters of drilling has been done. He expressed hope for a quick breakthrough, citing the ongoing efforts and the energy of the rescue teams.
Details of Rescue Operation
- Drilling from Tunnel Mouth: Approximately 57 meters of drilling from the tunnel mouth is required to lay a pipe to reach the trapped workers.
- Overcoming Challenges: The presence of steel girders initially hindered the process but has now been reduced, with more concrete being encountered and cut through.
CM Dhami’s Site Review
CM Dhami reviewed the rescue operations alongside key government officials, including Secretary Neeraj Khairwal, DM Abhishek Ruhela, SP Arpan Yaduvanshi, and advisors from the Prime Minister’s Office.
Rat-hole miners, actively involved in the manual drilling since Monday night, are optimistic about completing the work within 24 hours. Naseem, a worker on the site, mentioned that they have already completed 5 meters of manual drilling and have only 6 meters left.
Expert Views and Machine Challenges
Chris Cooper, a micro-tunneling expert, finds the current pace of work promising. The auger machine, stuck at 47 meters, was removed using a plasma cutter, allowing for continued progress.
Officials confirmed that the trapped workers are in stable condition, and ongoing assessments of the situation are being conducted by high-level delegations, including the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister.
The rescue operation for the trapped laborers in the Uttarakhand tunnel is a complex and challenging endeavor, but the dedication and combined efforts of multiple teams provide hope for a successful outcome.
