Former Indian-Origin MP Dave Sharma Secures Australian Senate Seat: Report
Dave Sharma, making history in 2019 as Australia’s first Indian-origin lawmaker, marks a significant return to the political arena with his recent victory in the New South Wales Liberal Senate race. Replacing the retired ex-foreign minister Marise Payne, Sharma, aged 47, emerges victorious against former New South Wales minister Andrew Constance, garnering widespread support within the party.
A Decisive Win Amid Strong Competition
In a closely contested vote among New South Wales Liberal Party members, Sharma secured his position by defeating Constance with a margin of 251-206 votes. His diplomatic prowess, showcased during his tenure as Australia’s ambassador to Israel from 2013 to 2017, played a critical role in swaying the party moderates in his favor.
Vision for Accountability and National Security
Embracing the mantle from Senator Payne, Sharma expressed his eagerness to challenge the Albanese government’s policies in the Senate, particularly focusing on the escalating cost-of-living crisis in New South Wales. He also underscored his commitment to bolstering Australia’s national security in a rapidly evolving global landscape.
Praise and Support from Party Leadership
Opposition leader Peter Dutton lauded Sharma’s win, emphasizing the timeliness and importance of his diplomatic and foreign policy expertise, especially considering current global tensions. Deputy Opposition Leader Sussan Ley commended Sharma as a “fitting replacement” for Payne, acknowledging his unique contributions to the Senate.
