Supreme Court Reinforces its Role as a Pillar of Democracy on Constitution Day
Chief Justice of India, D Y Chandrachud, highlighted the Supreme Court’s role as a “people’s court” during the Constitution Day celebrations. He emphasized the court’s function in resolving disputes and upholding individual rights, paralleling the Constitution’s provision for resolving political differences through democratic institutions. Chandrachud underlined that each case heard by the courts extends the reach of constitutional governance, reinforcing the judiciary’s commitment to justice and the rule of law.
Diverse Representation and Citizen-Centric Approach
In his address, the CJI underscored the importance of diverse representation in the judiciary to better serve justice. He stressed that cases brought to the Supreme Court are not mere statistics but reflect the public’s trust and the court’s dedication to justice. Further highlighting the Supreme Court’s efforts to make its administrative processes more citizen-centric, Justice Chandrachud spoke about initiatives to address prison overcrowding and ensuring that the judiciary is seen as a proactive guardian of the people’s rights.
Technological Integration and Accessibility in Judiciary
Justice Chandrachud also discussed the Supreme Court’s adoption of technology to enhance transparency and inclusivity. The introduction of live-streaming court proceedings, translating verdicts into regional languages using AI and machine learning, and the launch of e-SCR in various Indian languages are steps towards making the judicial process more accessible. He also mentioned the launch of ‘e-sewa kendras’ in courts to ensure no citizen is left behind in the judicial process. These technological advancements are not just about efficiency but also about bringing the judiciary closer to the citizens, fostering trust and participation in the legal system.
