Supreme Court – A Beacon of Hope and Justice for All Citizens: CJI India
Chief Justice of India, D Y Chandrachud, emphasized the role of the Supreme Court as a “people’s court” during the Constitution Day celebrations at the Supreme Court. He articulated that the court system plays a crucial role in resolving disagreements through established principles and processes, extending the reach of constitutional governance. His remarks underscored the court’s commitment to being an approachable and reliable avenue for citizens to seek justice and resolve disputes.
Inclusive and Accessible Judicial Processes
Justice Chandrachud highlighted the diverse nature of cases that the Supreme Court handles, ranging from personal liberty, unlawful arrests, and social issues to environmental concerns. These cases reflect the expectations of the public and the court’s dedication to justice. He noted the unique accessibility of the Supreme Court, where any citizen can initiate constitutional proceedings by writing to the CJI. Efforts are ongoing to ensure that the court’s administrative processes are citizen-centric, fostering a deeper connection between the people and the judiciary. The CJI also mentioned steps taken to address issues like overcrowding in prisons, emphasizing the judiciary’s role in ensuring that citizens do not feel intimidated by the legal system.
Technological Advancements and Language Accessibility
Justice Chandrachud spoke about the Supreme Court’s initiatives to make its proceedings more transparent and accessible. Live-streaming of court proceedings and media reporting on court activities have been encouraged to enhance public engagement. The Supreme Court’s decision to translate its verdicts into regional languages using Artificial Intelligence and machine learning is a significant step towards inclusivity. As of November 25, 2023, thousands of judgments have been translated and are available on the e-SCR platform. The launch of ‘e-sewa kendras’ in all courts is another milestone, ensuring that no citizen is left behind in the judicial process. These initiatives reflect the judiciary’s commitment to embracing technology not as a barrier but as a means to integrate more closely with the lives of citizens.
