Bihar Government Increases Reservation Quota to 65% in State Jobs and Education
The Nitish Kumar-led government in Bihar has officially increased the reservation quota for deprived castes in state government jobs and educational institutions. This move comes after receiving assent from Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, following the issuance of gazette notifications.
The Bihar Reservation of Vacancies in Posts and Services Amendment Bill and the Bihar Reservation (Admission In Educational Institutions) Amendment Bill, 2023, received formal assent from the Governor. This approval enables the implementation of the revised quota percentages in state jobs and educational facilities.
Details of the Reservation Hike
The legislation, cleared by the state legislature during the winter session, proposes an increase in the quota for various groups:
- Scheduled Castes (SC) from 16% to 20%
- Scheduled Tribes (STs) from 1% to 2%
- Extremely Backward Castes (EBCs) from 18% to 25%
- Other Backward Classes (OBCs) from 15% to 18%
This hike elevates the total caste-based reservation from 50% to 65%.
Total Reservation in Bihar Now at 75%
With this increase, the total quantum of reservation in jobs and educational institutions in Bihar stands at 75%, factoring in the existing 10% quota for economically weaker sections (EWS).
Governor Arlekar’s assent aligns with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s recent expression of hope for the approval of these bills. This decision marks a significant shift in the reservation policy in Bihar, aiming to address the needs of various socially and economically disadvantaged groups in the state.
